Is a hidden evolutionary error making you suffer?
Purpose and Meaning
To understand why meaning feels so real, we have to zoom out from philosophy and look at something older: evolution.
Many of the systems we experience as uniquely human—sleep, hunger, fear, attention—are not uniquely human at all. They are ancient biological systems shaped long before Homo sapiens existed.
Even consciousness itself appears to be an evolved mechanism, not a separate domain of reality.
And yet we treat it as if it is special.
We assume our inner experience is not just useful for survival, but somehow authoritative about the nature of reality itself.
This is where the complication begins.
Because once a system evolves the ability to model itself—once it becomes self-aware—it gains something powerful and dangerous at the same time: the ability to generate abstract concepts that feel real but are not necessarily grounded in external objects.
Meaning may be one of those concepts.
A cognitive output that helps coordinate behavior, motivation, and social cohesion—but which can also detach from reality and take on the appearance of objective truth.
This becomes even more pronounced in complex social systems.
Shared beliefs about meaning scale incredibly well. They organize societies. They motivate sacrifice. They stabilize cooperation.
But they also create vulnerability.
Because once meaning becomes socially reinforced, it can be shaped, directed, and sometimes exploited. Entire systems can emerge that rely on individuals believing their suffering has externally guaranteed significance.
And that raises a difficult possibility: what if the human mind did not evolve to discover meaning, but to produce it when it was useful for survival?
And what if, in modern environments, that same mechanism is now overactive—creating patterns of belief that no longer serve the conditions they evolved for?
This is not an argument against meaning itself.
It is an argument that meaning may not be what we think it is.
