Our Mission

Here's where you come in...

Good morning friends,

I’m grateful for the chance to have shared my story with you yesterday. Even if only in some small way, I hope that it contextualized this newsletter for some and offered hope and solidarity for others.

Today is all about you! I want to introduce the mission, values, and guiding principles of this community. Because beyond just a daily email, what is emerging here is indeed a community.

So what exactly are we all doing here?

First, let’s start with the working mission:

To increase our empathy and compassion through the study of timeless wisdom.

Which leads to our vision:

To build a global community of people dedicated to this mission.

And we’re going to do this through

  • Daily Newsletter

  • Weekly “threads” (a live chat capability where we can share with one another)

  • Monthly Zoom Sessions

  • (Plus some future projects currently in the works, more to come!)

Guiding us in our time together, we want to honor a few principles that animate our space:

  1. This is a neutral space.
However and whenever we connect, we will promise one another to suspend judgements and agendas. We’re here to explore life and the wisdom of those who have gone before. It’s a place where we can deconstruct thoughts, and challenge the way things are. It’s not a place to sell an idea or argue for a side. It’s aggressively neutral.

  2. This is an inclusive space.
There is no dominant culture or ideology. We’re not leaning from one space into another, we’re exploring the volumes of global timeless wisdom together. Sometimes, this might feel familiar while others it will feel completely foreign. The key is to show up for each other every day.

  3. We’re a community.
First and foremost, this is a space for us to do the work. It’s a conversation and an ongoing project—it’s not something you can consume, we must participate and show up together. We need to hear your voice.

  4. Our study is timeless.
We’re leverage the writings, speeches, and reflections of the world’s great traditions and philosophers to do our own work. We might find ourselves intersecting occasionally with current events, but it’s not the point of this community. We want to take a step back and create a wisdom base that allows us to approach and interpret whatever may come our way in the most empathetic, compassionate lens possible.

I’m excited to continue this journey with you, friends.

Tomorrow, we’ll discuss more practically how we will enact these guiding principles and achieve this vision. We’ll also open up the floor for a vote on some minor “rebranding” decisions as we move from a daily newsletter to a global community.

Please make sure to share this with your friends who you think would enjoy participating, and if you haven’t already, make sure to subscribe to receive a reflection on timeless wisdom in your inbox every weekday morning.

Share

Until tomorrow,

Matt
